    The VOICES Reading Series welcomes Joe Hall '04 (Univ. of Maryland). Hall is author of a book of poetry titled Pigafetta is My Wife, which has appeared on the Small Press Distribution Best Seller List and is a Poetry International Notable Book of the Year. Daugherty-Palmer Commons at 8:15 pm.

Oysters Get New HomePhoto by Bill Wood
As part of their community service during orientation, first-year students helped transport bags of baby oysters to barges, then to their new home on a sandbar out in the St. Mary’s River. St. Mary’s Moves Up in Rankings
St. Mary’s continues to get top grades in the annual best college ranking guides, including in this weekend's Parade magazine and in the influential U.S. News & World Report, which lists it as one of the top five public liberal arts colleges in the nation and has moved the college up four spots to 88 in the list of the top 100 national liberal arts colleges. Fulbright Awarded to Professor Cain
Michael J.G. Cain (professor of political science and director for the Center for the Study of Democracy) will head to China on a Fulbright Lecture Fellowship next spring. Cain's area of research is energy reforms in China.

Candidate Forum on September 7
A public forum for candidates seeking party nominations in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District will be held 6:30-8:30 pm Tuesday, September 7, at Auerbach Auditorium in St. Mary’s Hall at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The 5th Congressional District seat is currently represented by Democrat Steny Hoyer, the House Majority Leader. Three Democrats, including Hoyer, Sylvanus Bent, and Andrew Gall, and four Republicans, Collins Bailey, Chris Chaffee, Charles Lollar, and Chris Robins, will appear on the September 14th primary ballot; all have been invited to attend. The forum is sponsored by the College’s Center for the Study of Democracy and the St. Mary’s County branch of the NAACP. See full release.

Klapper '10 Named Portz Scholar
Stephanie Klapper '10, a psychology major from Germantown, Maryland, has been named one of four national Portz Scholars in the National Collegiate Honors Council's competition for outstanding undergraduate honors paper. Klapper will present her paper, which she wrote as part of her St. Mary's Project under the mentorship of Renee Dennison (psychology), at the national conference in Kansas City, Missouri this October. 

College Wins State "Green" Leadership Award
St. Mary's College is one of five organizations to receive the Leadership Award of the Maryland Green Registry. This is the first year the Registry has recognized special leadership amongst its 210 members. In its winning application, the College noted it is particularly proud that its environmental efforts are championed by the students. See full release.
